Nelly Erichsen was a feminist pioneer - an artist who trained and exhibited at the Royal Academy, a published translator and travel writer, and a prolific book illustrator. Born in 1862, she lived through five decades of dramatic political and social progress for women, dying tragically in 1918 from Spanish flu, contracted working among refugees in Tuscany. In her lifetime, women in Britain fought for the right to be treated as equal with men. Some focused on the fight for the right to vote. Others faced the challenge of economic equality head on, infiltrating male-dominated professions to earn a living. These professional self-supporting women did as much for the feminist cause as those who chained themselves to railings. This book is about one of those women.
